The house has a very restful feel and casually entertain often.Multiple work zones for multiple people. Father’s Day they had a small gathering of 24 people, so the kitchen was the heart of activity. Their extended family is very large family. Homeowners have grown children, who are often home. The furniture pcs in the kitchen was selected and designed into the plan with dish storage in mind, but feels spontaneous in this casual and warm space. Wall space was exclusively dedicated to appliances. A second oven was placed on the island, so the microwave could be placed higher than countertop level on one of the only walls in the kitchen. The bookcase acts as a mini-drop off for keys on the way out the door. Base cabinets included rollout drawers to maximize the storage. Back at the Kitchen, Dishes & glasses were placed in drawers that were customized to accommodate taller tumblers. The house was designed by Architect, Jack Jenkins and he allowed for a walk in pantry around the corner that accommodates smaller countertop appliances, food and a second refrigerator. The view over a private lake is worth the trade, but finding a place to put dishes and glasses became problematic. The big challenge of this kitchen was the lack of wall cabinet space due to the large number of windows, and the client’s desire to have furniture in the kitchen. The gold shelving brackets, large pendant fixtures over the island and the tile mural behind the range all pay subtle homage to the home’s prairie style architecture and bring a bit of sparkle to the room.Įven though the room is quite large, the work triangle is very tight with the large Subzero fridge, sink and range all nearby for easy maneuvering during meal prep. Since the neighboring room has literally three walls of almost full height windows, the kitchen gets plenty of light. It is flanked on either side by pull out pantries that I’m sure will get a ton of use. I am calling it the “fun zone” because it houses all the barware, wine cubbies and a bar fridge - the perfect little buffet spot for entertaining. This ended up being one of the nicest areas in the room. After much back and forth, we decided to eliminate it and do some open shelving instead. Dark and gloomy turned fresh and light!Īnother serious consideration was what do we do with the skinny transom window above the refrigerator. It makes a huge difference in the feel of the space. Well we soon found out that it was mostly decorative (yay!), and with the exception of a little bit of work to some plumbing from an upstairs bathroom and rerouting of the ventilation system within the original floor joists, we were in the clear, phew!
